Replacing existing cube walls with visualization technologies based on LCD displays or LEDs often involves considerable effort. In most cases, a technology change requires modifications to the control room wall or the cube enclosure. Space requirements, downtime and image formats must be taken into account.

LEDs have a similar service life to cube projectors, but are tied to a fixed grid. A 1:1 exchange is only possible with 70” cubes in 16:9 format with LED modules. LCD displays for video walls are also only available in fixed formats that differ from the conventional cube dimensions. The average service life is 50,000 hours for LCD displays, 100,000 hours for LEDs and up to 130,000 hours for cube projectors (manufacturer's specifications).

Since the current large-screen systems have an aspect ratio of 16:9, the display of information in other formats (4:3, 5:4, 16:10) leads to changes in font size, readability and modified symbol contours.

In terms of initial costs, the LCD display is currently the most cost-effective solution for a replacement, followed by the cube projector and LEDs. A change to LCD or LED requires additional investments in conversion measures, the adaptation of control and process images, a possible computer replacement and the purchase of new mounting systems. Furthermore, planning costs and costs for visibility studies must be taken into account.

Retrofitting existing cube walls is easier to implement. In addition to the costs for the projector, there are only costs for a compatibility test of the new projector with the existing cube housing and for the mechanical components to integrate the projector into the cube housing.
